  • Moisture-resistant drywall boards resist humidity and occasional splashes better than standard board.
  • Used in bathrooms, en-suites, kitchens, laundries and other humid rooms, including behind tiles.
  • Moisture-resistant board is not waterproof. Showers and other wet zones still need a waterproofing system.

Typical Applications

AreaNotes
Bathroom and en-suite wallsMoisture-resistant board, with waterproofing in shower areas
Bathroom ceilingsMoisture-resistant board and an extractor fan
Kitchens and sculleriesBehind splashbacks and around sinks
LaundriesSteam from washing machines and tumble dryers
Humid roomsRooms with poor ventilation or near the coast

Areas with standing water, or walls exposed to the weather, need other products such as fibre-cement board or masonry.

What Installation Includes

  • Steel framing with the correct stud spacing for tiling, where tiles will go.
  • Moisture-resistant board fixed and joints finished.
  • Edges and penetrations sealed.
  • A waterproofing membrane in wet zones, if included. Ask whether the drywall contractor or the tiler is responsible.
  • Ready for tiling or painting.

Board Choices

  • Moisture-resistant gypsum board. For humid rooms and as a tile backing outside wet zones.
  • Fibre-cement or cement board. For areas that get wet often, such as shower walls.
  • Standard board. Fine for dry rooms, but not for bathrooms or behind sinks.

Tile adhesive and waterproofing products must be compatible with the board. Good ventilation matters as much as the board.

Installation Process

  1. Agree which areas get moisture-resistant board and which need waterproofing.
  2. Frame, allowing for tile weight and fittings such as basins.
  3. Board and seal.
  4. Waterproof wet zones and let it cure.
  5. Tile or paint.

What Affects the Cost

What Affects Completion Time

  • Boarding a bathroom usually takes a day or two.
  • Waterproofing must cure before tiling.
  • Plumbers and electricians need to work before the walls are closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is moisture-resistant drywall waterproof?

No. It resists humidity and splashes. Showers and wet zones need waterproofing or a cement-based board.

Can I tile onto moisture-resistant board?

Yes, with a suitable adhesive and waterproofing in wet areas. The frame must be strong enough for the tiles.

Do I need it in a guest bathroom?

Yes. Any room with a shower or bath gets steam.

Why does my bathroom ceiling get mould?

Usually poor ventilation. Moisture-resistant board helps, but an extractor fan solves the cause.

Can moisture-resistant board be used outside?

No. It is for internal use.
