What Skimming Includes

  • Preparation: setting proud screws, trimming torn paper and removing dust.
  • Taping all joints and fitting corner beads on external corners.
  • Filling joints and screw heads.
  • One or two skim coats over the area being finished.
  • Sanding where needed and priming, ready for paint.

Agree the finish level in writing. It is the most common cause of disputes over drywall finishing.

Materials

  • Jointing compound. Ready-mixed or setting powder, used for joints and screw heads.
  • Skim plaster. Gypsum skim plaster such as Rhinolite for a full skim coat.
  • Tape and beads. Paper or mesh tape for joints, metal or PVC beads for corners.
  • Primer. A sealer evens out suction so the paint finish is uniform.

Skimming Process

  1. Prepare the surface and fix any loose boards.
  2. Tape the joints and fit corner beads.
  3. Fill the joints and screw heads.
  4. Apply the skim coat or coats.
  5. Let it dry, sand where needed and prime.

Drywall Skimming Prices

ItemBallpark price

Full skim coat, labour and materialsR200 - R500 per m²

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges are compiled from price guides published by South African drywall and ceiling contractors in 2025 and 2026, checked 8 October 2026, and rounded. Most do not say whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote. A site visit and a written quote set the actual price.

What Affects the Cost

  • Area. Larger areas usually cost less per m².
  • Condition. Damaged paper, uneven boards and old paint need more preparation.
  • Finish level. A full skim costs more than finishing joints only.
  • Height and detail. Ceilings, bulkheads and many corners take longer.
  • Painting. Ask whether primer and paint are included.

What Affects Completion Time

  • Each coat must dry before the next, so most rooms take 1 - 3 days.
  • Cold or humid weather slows drying.
  • Painting should wait until the skim is fully dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does new drywall need skimming?

The joints and screw heads always need finishing. A full skim is optional and depends on the paint and lighting.

Can painted drywall be skimmed?

Yes, after cleaning, sanding and usually a bonding primer so the skim sticks.

Why do joints show after painting?

The filled joints absorb paint differently from the board. A primer or a full skim fixes it.

Is skimming drywall the same as plastering brick?

No. Drywall skim is a thin finishing coat. Brick walls get a thicker sand-and-cement plaster first.

How long before I can paint?

Usually a day or more, depending on thickness and weather. Ask the contractor.

Skimming is the last step of every new partition. See Drywall Installers South Africa for full installations.
