What Bulkhead Installation Includes

  • Agreeing drops, widths and levels, ideally on a drawing.
  • A steel frame hung from the roof or slab.
  • Boarding, including curves where needed.
  • Corner beads, jointing and a skim finish.
  • Cut-outs for lights and access panels for services.

Materials and Finishes

  • Board. Standard board for straight bulkheads, thin flexible board for curves.
  • Edges. Metal or PVC corner beads for crisp corners, or a shadowline gap.
  • Finish. A full skim is usual. Light along a bulkhead shows every flaw.
  • Access panels. Needed wherever valves, drivers or air-conditioning units sit inside.

Lighting and Concealed Services

  • Plan the lighting before framing. Recess depth must suit the fitting.
  • LED strip drivers must stay reachable, usually through an access panel.
  • Electrical work must be done by a registered electrician, who issues a Certificate of Compliance.
  • Ducts and pipes need enough clearance inside the box, plus access for maintenance.

Installation Process

  1. Set out the bulkhead and agree the lighting layout.
  2. Build the frame and fix it to the structure.
  3. Electrician runs the wiring.
  4. Board, bead and skim.
  5. Prime, paint and fit the lights.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges are compiled from price guides published by South African drywall and ceiling contractors in 2025 and 2026, checked 8 October 2026, and rounded. Most do not say whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote. A site visit and a written quote set the actual price.

What Affects the Cost

  • Length. Most bulkheads are priced per linear metre.
  • Size of the drop. Deeper and wider boxes use more frame and board.
  • Levels and curves. Multi-level steps and curves take much longer.
  • Lighting. Recesses, coves and the electrical work add cost.
  • Height. Double-volume spaces need scaffolding.

What Affects Completion Time

  • A single straight bulkhead often takes 1 - 2 days plus finishing.
  • Multi-level or curved features take longer.
  • The electrician must fit in between framing and boarding.
  • The skim must dry before painting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a bulkhead make my room feel lower?

Only around the bulkhead. A well-placed drop can define a zone without lowering the whole ceiling.

Can a bulkhead hide an air-conditioning duct?

Yes, as long as there is clearance around the duct and access for maintenance.

Does the drywall contractor do the electrical work?

Some work with an electrician. Wiring must be done by a registered electrician who issues a Certificate of Compliance.

Can bulkheads be curved?

Yes, using flexible board and a curved frame. It costs more than a straight bulkhead.

Bulkhead or suspended ceiling?

A bulkhead is a feature or box in one area. A suspended ceiling covers the whole room with a grid.
