Homes and businesses need different access, working hours and finishes, so say which you have when you request quotes.

How Drywall Installation Works

  1. Set out. The wall line is marked on the floor and ceiling and checked for pipes and cables.
  2. Frame. Steel tracks are fixed to floor and ceiling and studs set between them. Door openings are framed and reinforced.
  3. Services and insulation. Electrical conduits, plug boxes, backing for heavy items and any insulation go in before the second side is closed.
  4. Board. Gypsum boards are screwed to the studs on both sides.
  5. Finish. Joints are taped and filled, corners beaded, and the wall is skimmed or sanded ready for paint.

Confirm in each quote which steps are included, especially finishing and painting.

Board and Frame Options

  • Standard gypsum board. For most walls in homes and offices.
  • Moisture-resistant board. For bathrooms, kitchens and laundries. It is not waterproof, so showers still need waterproofing.
  • Fire-rated board. Used as part of a tested fire-rated system where the building requires one.
  • Acoustic build-ups. Insulation and extra board layers to reduce sound between rooms.
  • Stud size and spacing. Wider studs or closer spacing for taller walls, tiles and wall-mounted items.

Drywall or Brick for Internal Walls

  • Drywall goes up faster, with far less mess and no wet plaster to cure.
  • It is much lighter, which suits upper floors and alterations. An engineer should confirm for suspended floors.
  • Services run inside the wall instead of being chased into brick.
  • It is not load-bearing, and heavy items need backing planned before boarding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this service work?

You send one enquiry. Relevant independent drywall contractors contact you and quote. You compare and choose, or appoint nobody.

Does it cost anything?

No. Requesting quotes is free and there is no obligation. Your agreement is with the contractor you appoint.

Do you install drywall yourselves?

No. This is a quote-comparison service. Independent drywall installers measure, quote and do the work.

How much does drywall partitioning cost in South Africa?

Published 2026 prices for a standard partition are roughly R350 - R500 per m² supplied and installed, or R950 - R1,200 per linear metre up to about 2.7 m high.

How long does drywall installation take?

A single room division is often framed and boarded in a day or two, with another day or two for finishing because the joints need drying time.

Can drywall hold a TV or shelves?

Yes, if backing or extra studs are built in where the weight will go. Tell the contractor before the wall is boarded.

Is a drywall partition load-bearing?

No. Drywall partitions divide space. They do not carry the roof or floors above.

Do I need approval to put up a partition?

Check with your landlord, body corporate or municipality, especially for business premises, escape routes and sectional-title units.
